Oomph. The Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte. Every coffee lover's dream drink with a little splash of so-called fall heaven. Lauren and I recently had the Pumpkin Spice Creme drink there (Can you tell that I am a Starbucks novice?) and it was less than impressive. All I tasted was sugar and a slight resemblance of fall spices. I'm pretty sure there isn't any real pumpkin in that pumpkin syrup you can buy on their website. [Sidebar: There seems to be very few processed foods that actually have REAL pumpkin in their snacks. I am very saddened by this.] But the thing is, it isn't hard to make one yourself. It's actually incredibly easy if you have 10 minutes and a microwave.
And the best part about this latte is that it is 4 simple ingredients, with a few delicious optional add-ons if you wish. And actually, that isn't the best part. The best part is that those 4 simple ingredients make for one tasty latte. It's thick, luscious, and has a really lovely pumpkin flavor. REAL pumpkin flavor. Because it has REAL pumpkin.
And don't kill me when I say this: I don't drink coffee. I drink tea. And lots of it. But you won't have to attempt to kill me because I am pretty sure you can finagle this recipe a little and use coffee. But I haven't tried it yet.
This recipe is incredibly simple. Here is a picture step-by-step for you with incredibly easy directions.
Steep chai tea bag in 12 oz. hot milk (I used almond milk). I microwaved mine in the mug for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Steep while adding the rest of the ingredients into mug.
Add 2 heaping tablespoons of pumpkin puree to the mug.
Add 1 tablespoon of honey to mug.
Stir until ingredients are incorporated. The pumpkin tends to clump up and requires some vigorous stirring.
This here is a magical concoction of fall spices. I like to add a dash of McCormick's Pumpkin Pie Spice* to my latte for a little bit more fall magic.
Could that have been easier to make? For real, though...you wait 10 minutes for the barista at Starbucks to make your PSL. You can make a REAL ingredient PSL right in your home in 10 minutes. I want you to be successful. I want you to drink this little bit of heaven. I want you to add that dollop (or heaping scoop) of whipped cream (or coconut cream for my vegan and vegetarian friends out there) to your PSL. It is worth every minute.
So this year, start fall off right with a the real PSL. Your body and wallet will thank you.
*McCormick did not sponsor this blog post. I just enjoy their Pumpkin Pie Spice blend so much.
